The 2023 Leagues Cup reached a dramatic conclusion on Saturday evening, as Inter Miami edged out Nashville SC in a marathon penalty shootout to win the trophy at Geodis Park.
After a 1-1 draw in Nashville, Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender was the hero for the Herons, saving Elliot Panicco’s spot-kick to secure victory after he himself had just netted from 12 yards.
Miami maestro Messi makes trophy history
While Miami’s triumph earned the MLS franchise its first ever piece of silverware, star player Lionel Messi increased his mammoth career trophy haul to a world-record 44.
The 36-year-old is now out on his own as the most decorated men’s player of all time, having previously been level with former Barcelona team-mate Dani Alves.
Messi takes individual Leagues Cup honours
After scoring his 10th goal of the 2023 Leagues Cup in this weekend’s final in Tennessee, Messi finished the tournament as top scorer, three ahead of Minnesota United’s Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
The Argentina captain was also named the competition’s best player.
